Travel And Tours In Africa Guide

An unusual yet fascinating goal of travel in Africa would be to visit Africa’s Deserts. This may sound drab, but the desert has many stories to tell. Deserts make up two-thirds of the African continent and are home to people, plants and animals. There are entire cultures that have grown and flourished in and around the desert.

The Sahara is the world’s largest desert. Located in North Africa, it covers over 31/2 million square miles, making it roughly equal in size to the United States of America. The Sahara has mountain ranges, large plains, a number of oases and the river Nile. It only receives 4 inches of rain a year, yet the Sahara supports over 2 million people. Groups such has the Berbers, the Moors, the Taureg and the Toubou live a semi-nomadic life in this desert raising sheep, goats, cattle and camels. They also grow barley, dates, and wheat.

The Sahara has some fascinating plants. Some plants have seeds that stay in the ground and do not grow until it rains; others draw water out of the air or drive roots deep into the ground. The animals which inhabit the Sahara include snakes, lizards, white gazelles and the addax, a type of antelope.

Africa’s next largest desert is on the southern end of the continent. This desert, called the Kalahari, covers 190, ooo square miles. It touches the nations of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. The Kalahari is a wildlife paradise. Antelopes, hyenas, meerkats, many species of birds and reptiles and even lions live in the Kalahari. The San people, sometimes called Bushmen, also live in this desert. Both man and animals survive on the acacias and the grasses and trees that thrive during the rainy summers. Travel in Africa and see the fascinating life in the desert.
